We've had some serious problems with feral boars over the years. They've pitted our farm land, claimed food we'd set out for livestock, and on occasion they've eaten our newborn calves.
We'd managed to trap about 20 of them earlier in the year and sold them to the slaughterhouse. But after they ate our entire cornfield a few months ago, I decided to do what any able bodied man would do. Go hunting in nature's grocery store for some payback. In this event, that payback involved a future dinner with tasty pork tenderloin as the centerpiece!
Now just to be clear, hunting feral hogs ain't easy. They tend to stay in the thick during daylight hours. Which meant I would have to hunt them at night. So, I went on Amazon and bought some greenlights to place above the deer feeders that were located a few acres out.
My order arrived a few days later, and I set everything up for the kill while the sun was still shining. Around dusk, I grabbed my .223 rifle, packed up the ATV, and headed back out to the feeders. Time to spot and drop a few hogs!
Well, at least that's what I thought. But those piggies are damn smart I tell you. Because I stayed at my post damn near all night, and none of the large boars that were worthwhile approached the feeder. I had a hunch that they were spooked off by the greenlight that I placed above it. Since I didn't want to jeopardize a future kill, I packed up the ATV and headed home to devise a new strategy.
The rest of that week, I spent my spare time searching the internet for a viable solution. One of them involved a thermal scope to spot boars in the dark. However, the good ones were really expensive and I wasn't prepared to make that kind of investment. So, my search continued.
Thankfully, I came across a pair of No-Glow Infrared Vision Binoculars that enable you to view animals in complete darkness. They caught my eye because the website stated that they were top-rated hunting binoculars with tactical night vision. They have a rubber coating that makes them extremely durable. They're also built to withstand heavy rain and still work to perfection.

After I inspected them and viewed the instructions I took time to familiarize myself with the controls. A short while later, it was time to pack up the ATV and head out to the feeders.
I arrived just in time to take the green lights down Before Sunset. That way I could make certain the larger boars weren't going to get spooked away. The only thing I had to do once I arrived was take position in my hunting stand and wait. Due to the fact that there was very little wind and very few bugs, it was a great night for hunting.
I patiently watched through the Infrared Binoculars for the hogs to arrive, and the sounders arrived to feed a few hours later. Although it was pitch black outside, I was able to see them in clear detail with the binoculars at about 65 yards away.
My hunch paid off, because this time the larger boars weren't spooked away from the feeder. They approached and fed with absolute impunity. So, I took a deep breath and steadied my aim.
I fired one round and missed, then another and missed again. The loud noise from my rifle caused most of the hogs to scatter. Before the last one could hit a good stride, I fired one last shot and dropped him. He was a good sized boar indeed, and I was thrilled that I got what I came for.
